Hydrolysis

Used in digestion, Hydrolysis is the chemical breakdown of a substrate usually with the assitance of an enzyme. An example of a hydrolytic enzyme would be sucrase to hydrolyze sucrose. This addition of water facillitates the breakup into smaller subunits. H+ will go to one piece and OH- will complete the other piece. Remember water is polar covalent and exists as Hydrogen Hyroxide.
